Louisiana State Dog - Catahoula Leopard Dog

On July 9th, 1979, the Catahoula Leopard Dog became the official state dog of Louisiana. It is the only breed of dog that is native to Louisiana. It is most likely a cross between the domestics dogs of the Indians of the Catahoula Lake Region and dogs introduced into the area by the Spanish in the 1500's. These dogs have glassy eyes, webbed feet, and a spotted coat.

Native American Indians used the Catahoula Leopard Dog to help them with hunting and tracking a variety of game.

Have you heard of the 1925 Serum Run? In 1925, 20 mushers and approximately 150 sled dogs; transported a diphtheria antitoxin across the United States Territory of Alaska (674 miles) to the city of Nome. This incredible feat was accomplished in 5 and half days. This historic dog sled feat saved the city of Nome and the surrounding communities from a diphtheria epidemic. The lead dog was named Balto; an Alaskan Malamute.

There is a statue in New York City's Central Park of Balto.

On April 18, 2010; the Alaskan Malamute became Alaska's State Dog. The Alaskan Malmute has a very long history in the state of Alaska. They are believed to have existed in the area some 5000 years. The breed is perfectly adapted to the Alaskan climate.

They are named after the native Inuit tribe known as Mahlemuts. The Mahlemuts settled around the Kotzebue Sound which is in the Arctic Circle. The Alaskan Malamute has had a close relationship with the Inuit Tribe; pulling heavy sledges, hunting, and tracking.

Barking dogs are a real nuisance. You should always be a good neighbor and make every effort to insure that your puppy or dog is not a problem in your neighborhood. There are several options with bark collars to address the nuisance type of barking. Some collars use static zap, some use a tone, some use a spray; use the type that you are comfortable with. You can also have your dog de-barked by your veterinarian as well. Most areas have barking ordinances and you should familiarize yourself with the one for your area. In most areas, the first offence is a warning, followed by fines. We all know dogs bark, just don't let it become a nuisance.

Dogs that jump up on people are a real problem. They can easily knock over children, elderly people, or small framed individuals. This is a behavior that starts when they are puppies and it should be discouraged from the beginning. If you see a puppy or dog start to jump up on you; turn your body sideways. You can also use your knee to nudge them away. It is important that you make an effort to convey to your puppy or dog that this behavior is not acceptable. One time will not get the message across; it will be necessary for you to repeat this message over and over again.

Training your puppy should begin at a very young age and continue for the rest of their life. Commands that you teach them should consist of just one word. For example; sit, stay, come, down, over, and wait. Treats as well as praise should be given when they successfully complete a command for you. Joggers should be more cautious when approaching someone with their dog from behind. Jogging shoes don't make a lot of noise on pavement; so many times you never even hear their approach. Startling a person and their dog from behind is not a good idea; it can create an unpredictable situation for all of you. The dog may view a person running at them as a threat.

I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me where a person walking their dog wants to come over with their dog for a simple socializing encounter. I have been told over and over again, " My dog is friendly and they love other dogs and people." Then as soon as they are close; the other person's dog lunges and starts biting at my dog. They all respond the same, "They have never done that before." Dogs just like people can be intimidated by size; so keep that in mind with socializing encounters. You don't want to put your dog in a situation where they might feel threatened; you do not know how they are going to react to that situation.

Urinary infections in dogs are a costly visit to the vet. You will have the expense of a vet visit, lab work, medication, then a follow-up vet visit and additional lab work to determine if the infection has been taken care of. One of my females was having urinary infections often and I asked the vet if there was something I could do to maintain a healthier urinary tract for her. Their advice was an expensive prescription dog food. I decided to try cranberry pills for her instead. The urinary infections stopped.

Cranberry pills will not cure a urinary infection, you will need to take your dog to a vet to cure the infection. However, cranberry pills are beneficial in maintaining a healthy urinary tract.

Does your dog like to sit on your feet? This behavior should be discouraged; your dog is showing dominance over you by sitting on your feet. Whenever your dog is directly in front of you and facing away from you; they have the upper hand. One more instance where you should always maintain the alpha status not your dog.

It is a good idea to clean your dog's ears regularly; by doing so you avoid a costly visit to the vet. I recommend an antimicrobial cleansing solution. Put some of the cleansing solution on a cotton ball or facial tissue; gently wipe the inside of your dog's ears. Whenever you suspect your dog has an ear infection take them to the vet. Many Saint Bernards are plagued with ear infections; because of that you should try to keep their ears clean.

As your dog ages you might consider using raised feeders for their food and water bowls. Many pet stores sell raised feeders; but you can make your own as well. Go to your local home improvement store and purchases the round or square cement pavers; approximate size of the square ones are 12 inches across and 2 inches thick. The nice thing about using these pavers is that it allows you to adjust the height by adding or removing pavers. In the top paver; drill some holes for hardware (like nails or screws) position the holes so that they keep the food or water bowl in place.

Baking soda has many uses; it is great for cleaning your dog's teeth. Take a small amount of baking soda and add just enough water to create a paste. Apply the paste to your dog's teeth. You can use a regular toothbrush, or one from a pet store specifically made for dogs; a soft cloth can be used as well to apply the paste.

AKC Therapy Dog Program

So, what is a therapy dog? Therapy dogs and their owners volunteer to help people in a variety of settings such as:

Schools
Hospitals
Nursing homes
Hospices
Retirement homes

A therapy dog and their owner work as a team to help improve people's lives. Maybe they visit a senior's facility and read to a group whose eyesight is failing.

Therapy dogs are not service dogs. Service dogs are trained to assist someone with disabilities; service dogs stay with the person needing the assistance.

Canine Good Citizenship Program

All dogs including purebreds and mixed breeds are eligible to participate in the CGC test. All dogs must be old enough to have received necessary vaccinations such as rabies. Rabies vaccines are administered at 4 months of age.

There is no age limit for the CGC test. Puppies to seniors; all ages are welcome and encouraged to become Canine Good Citizens.

If the CGC test is given at an AKC show; then the age requirement for the show is also required for the CGC test. Conformation shows require that dogs be at least six months old. It may also be required that only dogs entered in the AKC show are eligible to participate in the CGC test; this stipulation would be included in the premium list for the AKC show.

The CGC test is administered with your dog on a leash. Collars can be made of leather, chain or cloth. Special training collars are not allowed for the test such as pinch collars ( this refers to the chain collars with pointed prongs), electronic collars, or head halters.

Body harnesses can be used. They should not restrict your dog from pulling or jumping. The person administering the test must be able to see that your dog has been trained not to pull or jump.

The 20 foot lead for the test is provided by the evaluator. You should bring your own brush/comb for the grooming/appearance portion of the test.

You are not allowed to use food or treats, or squeaky toys during the test. These things are beneficial when you are training your dog but are not allowed during the test. You are allowed to talk to and praise your dog.

Make sure your dog has a potty break prior to taking the test. Your dog will fail or be dismissed from the test if they:

Growl
Snap
Bite
Attack
Attempt to attack or bite another dog or person

Supervised separation - This portion of the test shows that your dog can be left with a trusted person and still exhibit good manners and training. The person administering the test will ask if you would like them to watch your dog. You will hand the leash over to them and casually walk away and out of sight. Your dog should not become overly stressed during your absence. You will remain out of your dog's sight for 3 minutes.

Reaction to distraction - Your dog will be tested with two types of distractions. For example something may be dropped by your dog, or a stroller rolled past them. Reaction to another dog - During this part your dog should demonstrate their ability to behave politely around other dogs. You and your dog will be approached by another person with their dog from about twenty feet. Sit and down on command Staying in place - This portion of the test demonstrates that your dog has received training. Your dog should respond to your commands of sit and down. A training lead of 20 feet is used for this portion of the test. Then you will be asked to walk away from your dog the full 20 feet of the training lead; your dog must stay while you do this. The evaluator will tell you when to release your dog from the stay command.

Walking through a crowd - This portion of the test determines how your dog behaves in a crowd and if you have your dog under control in this environment as well. Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead) - This part of the test is to show that you have control of your dog. You can walk your dog on your left or right side. The individual administering the test should be able to determine that your dog is responding to your commands, movements, and changes in direction. Your dog does not have to be perfectly aligned with your movements, nor does your dog have to sit whenever you stop. There may be a course set up for you to walk within; or you may be directed with instructions or commands. During the movement with your dog, you will be asked to make a right turn, left turn, an about turn, and a stop; in no particular order. You will be able to talk to your dog during all of this with commands and praise.

Appearance and grooming - This part of the test shows that your dog will allow someone to groom them, whether it is you or someone else. This also shows your sense of responsibility, care and concern in keeping your dog groomed. The individual giving the test will examine your dog to see that they are clean and groomed. They may look at your dog's ears, paws, etc. You should provide the brush or comb used to typically groom your dog. The evaluator will use it to lightly comb or brush your dog. During all of this, you can talk to your dog (with praise and encouragement), and they can sit or stand during this.

Sitting politely for petting - During this part of the test, your dog should allow a friendly stranger to pet them. Many countries outside the United States have created canine good citizenship programs based off the AKC's program. Neighborhood programs set up by law enforcement or animal control agencies utilize parts of the program to deal with dog problems in communities. Therapy dog groups sometimes use the program as a screening tool for their program.

Often Specialty Clubs offer the Canine Good Citizenship Test as an activity at their annual conformation shows. It is a very good idea to have your conformation dog complete this test.

The Canine Good Citizenship Program is often used as the starting place for training a dog. This provides a great foundation for other activities you can do with your dog such as:

Responsible pet ownership

What is a phenotype? This refers to observable traits found in dog; in other words things you can see. Like coat color, shape of head, tail type.

What is genotype? This refers to the genetic makeup of a dog.

What does homozygous mean? A trait is homozygous when both alleles are identical. It also means that both the dog and bitch had the same allele for that trait.

What does heterozygous mean? A trait is heterozygous when the two alleles are different. In other words, the dog contributed a different allele from the bitch for that trait.

What is a genome? A genome is the end result of all the genes combined in an organism. The canine genome consists of approximately 2.5 billion DNA based pairs.

Another part to consider on how traits are passed along are chromosomes. A chromosome is the organized structure of DNA. Genes are placed together in a precise order resembling long strands. I love the Saint Bernard breed; even though in recent yearsI have been witness to a side of this breed that is very troubling. Another thing we observed with the dog show world is peoplestrive to finish a dog very quickly. This is very true for the larger dogs. I sometimes think this has a lot to do with how powerful the larger dogsbecome with maturity. If these dogs donot get sufficient training and socializing; they will be very difficult tohandle in the show ring. Many Saintfanciers have observed in recent years that aggression has become a problemwith too many Saint Bernards. Aggressionis not welcome in any breed; but is especially undesirable in the largebreeds.

Longevity in the dog show world gives you the knowledgenecessary to be successful. The moreshows you attend, the more judges you will encounter. Each judge is unique and you should learnsomething new with each one; the things you learn will help you to be more successfulin the future. Observing the techniquesof other handlers is also very beneficial. The handler who makes this looks easy deserves your attention. Take the time to really watch them in thering; many are like magicians.

Try to keep in mind that every time your dog enters the ring, you are asking someone's opinion about them. There will be judges that like your dog and those that don't. Learn from what they have to say; try not to take what is said personally. You have asked for their opinion and it has been given.

We quickly saw that our breed of choice, the Saint Bernard,is not well represented at the all breed shows. Often there is no competition, so no points are awarded. In the beginning we were not troubled bythat, we figured it was still good experience for our dogs and us. As more time passed and our knowledgeincreased; we realized that to finish adog as a Champion there has to be competition. There is competition and points at the specialty shows; but winning isanother matter. If you have a qualitydog and it is showcased to show those qualities, the wins will follow. Sometimes the dog alone can bring even thenovice to the winner’s circle. It justdepends on what the judge likes.

Dog Show World - continues

Starting later in life with the dog show world seems like agood plan. You have more free time andoften more expendable income. We hadmore free time for this endeavor but our window for financing this adventurewas for a limited time. In our case, weshould have gotten involved several years earlier. This may have allowed us to have more success.

We were not successful in the dog show world; it did lookvery promising in the beginning. Wefound ourselves going to dog shows most every weekend and we were enjoyingit. We approached this as a learningexperience and we did learn a lot. Westill go to specialty shows of our breed, but now we are just spectators. The dog show world did appeal to me; settingon the side lines is not the same.

Another thing to consider before jumping into the dog show world would be attending several all breed or specialty dog shows. I say several because one show would not really reveal the positives nor the negatives of this environment.

There are several spectators at the all breed shows; strike up conversations with them. You might just be surprised the insight to dog shows you can learn from them.

Observe what is going on inside the shows ring and probably more importantly what is happening outside the ring. This can even guide you on choosing a handler for your dog. You can quickly see the skill level of these individuals. Some are very polished and their expertise is quickly noted. Even the novices will teach you something by observing them as well.

The Dog Show World - continues

There is a huge financial expense showing a dog, try to educate yourself fully on this. First off, you should determine if you are even able to manage this additional expense into your budget. I do not recommend purchasing a lot of equipment in the beginning; you might want to consider the expense of using a handler who already has equipment for dog shows instead. Once you determine that you will be staying involved in the dog show world; then you can decide to purchase some equipment.

Things like a larger vehicle, generators, the higher ticket items; put off till you are really hooked. What will you do with these sort of things if the dog show world does not work out for you? We purchased a lot of stuff and now it just gathers dust and takes up space in our garage.

I never thought it was going to be an easy endeavor, but itsounded very rewarding. I knew nothingabout showing dogs. It did seem like this was the next logicalstep after having Saint Bernards for over twenty years. The first mistake I made wasletting the breeder select the show puppy for me. I figured since this individual was a veteranbreeder and handler they would make a better choice than I could.

That is not necessarily the case, some puppies just do not develop into show quality. The veteran breeder/handler just moves on to another dog with this sort of situation. But what do you do, if you're new to this world? Maybe you are able financially to purchase another show dog, provided you have the space to have an additional dog. Then you can try again, what are the odds that this dog won't work out in the dog show world either? They are higher than you think; especially when you continue to use the same breeder.

I would advise from the very start to trust your own instincts regarding picking a show dog. Then no matter how the future unfolds, you won't be blaming someone else if things don't work out. Input from other individuals is very beneficial and should definitely be considered in making your choice; but let it be your choice.

The Dog Show World

Iwish I had been able to get some insight into becoming involved with the showenvironment. I think if someone had beenable to provide me with the pros and cons of show dogs, I could have made abetter informed choice regarding the matter.

The problem is you end up talking to dog show people to begin with; they love this world and will probably provide you with a biased opinion. It would be nice to find individuals who have tried the dog show scene and left or those who have retired from showing. You definitely need to talk with someone who has actually been involved in the dog show world.

Oh no! Not that one!We're "not" gonna go!
Remember last year howwe swore lose or win
That we'd never setfoot on these show grounds again?
Itwas hot, it was dirty. and not enough shade,
The inadequatebenching was so poorly made.
The entry was lousy inbitches and dogs,
And they charged waytoo much for their bad catalogues.
Therings were so distant and located far
From the quagmirewhere we abandoned the car
That we nearlycollapsed from having to pack
The dogs, crates andpenning over and back.
Andwe nearly expired from hunger and thirst,
'Cause the food anddrink set-up was truly the worst.
And the ring was sosmall and on uneven ground;
There were stickersand weeds and debris all around,
Andit's too far to travel for just one old show
So throw out theentries: we're not gonna go!
We'll stay home andloaf and relax and be glad
For no bathing, nailtrimming, and rushing like mad.
Nohitting the road at the dawn's early light,
No dragging home beatin the still of the night.
Just think of all thetime and expense
We'll save by justusing our good common sense.
However,there "is" one small thing I'll concede:
I would like to watchwhile they're judging our breed.
Say, I'll tell youwhat! Why don't we just go
As leisurelyspectators viewing the show?
Whata treat it will be to sit ringside with ease
And after the judging,just leave when we please.
No bother with dogsand all their regalia,
And all of the variousparaphernalia.
But.as long as we'll be there, what could be wrong
With 'just for fun'taking one dog along?
OK! We'll take one.But the problem is: which?
A pup? The special? Adog or a bitch?
If we took a puppy itwould just be for fun
But we could sure usethe points if the dog or bitch won.
We'llnever decide - it's no use to stall.
Dig out the entries -We'll enter them all!
But if it turns out asbad as we fear,
We'll really and trulystay home "next" year!

Time Capsules

Looking for something to do on New's Years Eve or Day, how about a time capsule? It is a great time to put one together with family and friends around. You could give your time capsule a theme or just put typical items from your everyday life inside. Someone will need to be assigned with the safekeeping of the capsule, decide upon the time frame for when it will be opened.

We put one together several years ago, it is locked away for 25 years. Here are some ideas to include in a capsule:

current photos of your time capsule group
business cards with your current position listed
currency (it does seem to change)
list of grocery items and their current cost
news worthy events local, national, or global
goals for the future

BET YOU CAN’T OWN JUST ONE

Why own a Show dog? There's a danger you know.
You can't own just one, for the craving will grow.

There's no doubt they're addictive, wherein lies the danger
While living with lots, you'll grow poorer and stranger.

One dog is not trouble, and two are so funny,
the third one is easy, the fourth one's a honey.

The fifth is delightful, the sixth one's a breeze.
You find you can live with a houseful, with ease.

So how 'bout another? Would you really dare?
They're really quite easy, but Oh Lord, the hair!

With dogs on the sofa, and dogs on the bed,
And crates in the kitchen, it's no bother, you said.

They're really no trouble, their manners are great.
What's just one more dog and one more little crate?

The sofa is hairy, the windows are crusty.
The floor is all footprints, the furniture's dusty.

The housekeeping suffers, but what do you care?
Who minds a few nose prints and a little more hair?

So let's keep a puppy, you can always find room.
And a little more time for the dust cloth and broom.

There's hardly a limit to the dogs you can add.
The thought of a cutback, sure makes you feel sad

Each one is so special, so useful, so funny.
The food bill grows larger, you owe the vet money.

Your folks never visit, few friends come to stay,
except other dog folks who live the same way.

Your lawn has now died and your shrubs are dead too,
Your weekends are busy, you're off with your crew.

There's dog food and vitamins, training and shots
and entries and travel, and motels cost lots.

Is it worth it, you wonder? Are you caught in a trap?
Then that favorite comes up and climbs in your lap.

Her look says you're special and you know that you will
keep all the critters in spite of the bill.

Some just for showing, and some just to breed,
and some just for loving, they all fill a need.

Winter is a hassle, but the dogs love it true,
And they must have their walks though you are numb and blue.

Late evening is awful, you scream and you shout
at the dogs on the sofa, who refuse to go out.

The dogs and the dog shows, the travel, the thrills
the work and the worry, the pleasure, the bills.

The whole thing seems worth it, the dogs are your life.
They're charming and funny and offset the strife.

Your lifestyle has changed, things just won't be the same.
Yes, those dogs are addictive and so's the dog game.

Teeth cleaning and x-raying for hip dysplasia is notnecessary during the first year of a puppy’s life. If there were any major deformities theyshould have been noted by your vet during their initial examination of yourpuppy. Saint Bernard puppies grow soquickly that first year, that early x-raying will not give an accurate pictureof problems. If your puppy is lame forextended periods of time, or has difficulty getting up or down, then x-rayingis beneficial; however it you have a healthy active puppy then this is notnecessary till they are older. Yourpuppy/dog has to be sedated for teeth cleaning or x-rays; this is not somethingyou want to do more often than is absolutely necessary.

Enrolling your puppy in a training class is a great idea; youlearn training techniques and more socializing occurs during class time. Make sure your puppy is around handicappedindividuals, those in wheelchairs, those with canes. Be sure they meet a wide age range ofindividuals; babies to elderly. Large ortall people, people with hats, people with bulky coats. Try to include as muchvariety as possible with dogs, puppies, and other animals as well. You will want your puppy to be well roundedwhen it comes to other dogs/animals and people. Socializing and training should occur duringyour dog’s entire life.

It is not a good idea to take your young puppy to a dog parkfor a socializing encounter. So manyloose dogs can be a bit overwhelming for your young pup. You really want to strive to make socializingencounters a positive experience; not something scary. If your young puppy has a bad experience, youmay have a difficult time helping them recover from it. In some cases puppies are permanently scarredfrom a bad encounter. Aggression can becomea major behavior problem; underlying causes for aggression are fear, territorialdominance, and pain. Once aggression isestablished in a puppy or dog, it cannot be fixed. You can be taught how to deal with theaggression, but it will not go away once it is established.

Socializing and training your puppy is very important. Actuallyit began before you got your puppy; the breeder on a daily basis handles thepuppies. They touch their paws, expose them to different textures, acclimatethem to noises (like a vacuum), just to name a couple of things. It is crucialthat during the first six months that you make every effort to socialize andtrain your puppy on a daily basis. Assoon as they have their first shots, the socializing and training should begin. It is best to control the situation for thefirst socializing encounter. You shouldknow the people, dogs, cats personally. These first socializing encountersshould be a positive experience for your puppy.

Puppy proof your yard, you want to make sure that theycannot get out of your yard. Check tosee if you have poisonous plants or shrubs. Puppies will get into mischief, so be prepared. Puppies will dig; and they will chew on ahuge variety of things. It is not a good idea to leave a Saint Bernard puppyalone for extended periods of time, some very serious behavior issues candevelop. Be a good neighbor and don’tlet your puppy be a barking nuisance.

Prior to bringing you puppy home, you should have a food bowl,water bowl, toys, collar, and leash. Itis a good idea to purchase a weighted bottom food and water bowl, this type isnot as easily knocked over. A 1 inchwide and 4 to 6 foot long leash is a good choice. Retractable leashes are never a good idea withthe large breed dogs. Some people preferchoke collars, other use just a regular collar, keep in mind the Saint Bernardpuppy will grow quickly and you will have to purchase a series of sizes. Nylabones are excellent for chewing; do notgive your Saint Bernard rawhide! Get anID tag for your puppy’s collar; consider having them micro chipped as well. A dog crate can be very useful; it is notcruel to use a crate. Your puppy willoften view a crate as a safe haven.
