Working Dog Group
The Working Dog was bred to perform some of the following tasks; performing water rescues, guarding property, and pulling sleds. Members of this group are quick learners, intelligent, and they make good companions. The Working Dog is also large and strong, they are not for every family. Because of their size, training is very important. Below is a list of the Working Dog Group.

Support Saint Bernard Rescue
You can help reduce your taxes and help a very worthy cause by supporting your local Saint Bernard Rescue Organization. Brandykegs has a list of Saint Bernard Rescue Organization from across the United States.
Adopt A Saint is the rescue organization located in Brandykegs' community. The individuals within this organization work tirelessly for our Saint Bernard Breed.
In these hard economic times, rescue organizations are doubly effected. Not only are donations down, but the number of Saint Bernards being turned over to rescue have really increased. If you are able to make a donation, please do.

Tear Stains
Many breeds are susceptible to the problem of tear stains around their eyes. There are many products that you can purchase over the counter at most pet stores. I was not having any luck with the products, nothing seemed to work.
A veteran breeder shared some advice on this with me. She recommended using Angels' Eyes. This is a powder substance that comes in chicken or liver flavor that you add to your dog's food. The ingredients for Angels' Eyes are 100% freeze dried chicken liver, and Tylosin as tartrate. I was surprised how quickly this began to work. By the end of the first week of use, there was a very noticiable difference.
I recommend you follow the directions on use of this product. In the beginning you use the product daily, then the amount is decreased. Use of the product is suggested for nine months.

Did You Get A New Puppy For Christmas?
Many of you may have got a new puppy for Christmas. Hopefully you did your homework, and this was not an impulse purchase. The first few days you spend with your new puppy are crucial, so make it a wonderful experience. You may not realize it but what transpires during those first few days imprints on your puppy.
Socializing and training a new puppy should begin immediately. Always supervise children around your new puppy. Be careful of other dog, not all dogs are friendly. If your puppy has a bad experience, it can negatively effect them in a similar situation in the future. In other words, during those first few days be selective with their exposure to other people and pets.
Always remember that dog ownership is a commitment for life. They will always look to you to provide them with food, water, shelter from the weather (be it hot or cold), baths, clean-up of their feces, and health care.

18 Shopping Days Till Christmas
To show or not to show? Until three years ago, I never gave this a thought. Our dogs had always been pets. They were all purebreds and were all registered with AKC. After having purebred dogs for over twenty years, it seemed like the next logical step was showing. For me if I had known then what I know now, I would never have started showing.
Showing dogs requires a lot of time and money. Unless you have a lot of free time, you will probably need to hire a handler for your dog. A good handler will know how to showcase your dog, they will know what shows to enter, and most of them do the grooming. As with anything, the more money you spend on handling usually equates to a more experienced individual and that in turn can produce winning results in the show ring.
Everytime your dog enters that ring, you are asking for a judgment call on your dog. Even though you are convinced that they are the best looking dog in the ring, the judge may not think so. Sometimes the judge agrees with you, but more times they don't. You have to be prepared for constructive criticism and not take it personally, learn from it.
I truly love the Saint Bernard breed. My dogs never had to prove their worth to me, but in the show ring that is exactly what you are asking of them. Finishing a dog as a Champion is not easy, and should never be taken for granted. The hard part is when you think you have a great dog and it can't be finished as a Champion. People ask you, "Why is this dog not finished?" "They are absolutely gorgeous." I never had any answers to those questions. The dog was gorgeous, and didn't misbehave. After a certain point, you have to stop. The older the dog is the less likely that they will be finished. Some people would say get another dog and move on. Well my dogs are not just dogs, they are part of my family. When you are winning, showing is very rewarding, but when you are not, it is disappointing and then becomes depressing. I don't want to feel disappointment or depression regarding my Saints. They are the best and beautiful, and I don't need a judge to tell me that.
So be cautious before you get involved with showing dogs. It can be a thrilling ride of wins, or one loss after another. You have to be prepared for either scenario.

You often hear people asking when they should spay or neuter their dog. It has been my experience that spaying or neutering should be done early. The number of health issues alone you avoid by doing this makes it a good decision.
People often say, I would never consider neutering my male dog till they are at least 3 or 4 years old. If you don't show your dogs and are not planning on breeding them, then there is no reason to wait that long. It does not affect their maturity or growth like so many people say.
Many times people want to wait for a female to have her first season before spaying. Once again if you don't show your dogs and are not planning on breeding them, why wait. If you spay prior to that first season, you avoid breast and uterine cancers. The downside to a spayed female is weight gain, you do have to be diligent and not let them become overweight for their entire life.
I recommend discussing spaying and neutering with your veterinarian. Ultimately it is your decision. It has been my experience that spayed and neutered dogs make better pets.

Did you know that using a time out method with your dog's bad behavior can be beneficial? I have found it is an effective way to get the message across to your dog that you are not happy with their behavior.
One fact is true with dogs, they love getting attention from us. If you take away the attention when they are exhibiting bad behaviors, they will notice. In fact, they will probably put up quite a fuss, howling, whining, barking to name a few things to try and get your attention. You need to be firm and ignore them. Isolating them away from you is necessary for success. I use one hour as a time out period. You have to be persistent in using the time out method, use it everytime not once in a while. It is also very important to use time out as soon as a bad behavior occurs, don't wait. If you do, they are not going to have any idea why they are in time out.
