Urinary Tract Infection In St. Bernard

One of our female dogs was regularly having urinary infections. Each time we suspected she had a urinary infection we took her to the vet to verify that she did have an infection; lab work is necessary and very expensive. The antibiotics to treat the infection are not cheap either. Then you have to have the lab work repeated to make sure the antibiotics got rid of the infection. Each urinary infection was running $500 to $600(this was in 2007). I asked the vet about preventative measures, their suggestion was a special prescription dog food. I decided to try cranberry pills after her last lab results showed no infection; it has been three years without a urinary infection. If you suspect your dog has a urinary infection take them to your vet for treatment. I know women and men drink cranberry juice to maintain a healthy urinary tract, so I thought I would give the pills a try for our bitch. It appears they may be helping her to maintain a healthy urinary tract as well. The cranberry pills will not cure a urinary infection but I do think they are helpful as a maintenance supplement.
