The Whippet is a sight hound; with great speed, power and balance.  Did you know that Whippets can run as fast as 35mph?  The breed is often referred to as a miniature English Greyhound; they have also been called, "the poor man's racehorse."  The Whippet was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1888.

The Treeing Walker Coonhound is adept at hunting and treeing raccoons.  The ideal coat color for this breed is tri-color; white, black, and tan.  This breed was developed from the Walker Foxhound.  The Treeing Walker Coonhound was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2012.

The Scottish Deerhound is an alert sight hound.  The hair on the body and neck is harsh and wiry; the hair on the head, breast, and belly is much softer.  This is an old breed; in the past no one under the nobility of an earl could own them.  The Scottish Deerhound was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1886.

The Saluki may appear delicate and fragile however; they are avid hunters that possess the strength and endurance for a long hunt over difficult terrain.  The Saluki is a sight hunter; in the past they were used to hunt gazelles.  Did you know the Saluki is the royal dog of Egypt?  This breed has been depicted in carvings as far back as 7000 B.C. The Saluki was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1929.

The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a large and muscular dog.  Did you know they were originally bred to hunt lions in Africa?  The unique trait of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is the ridge of hair that grows forward on their back.  The Rhodesian Ridgeback was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1955.

The Redbone Coonhound has a natural treeing instinct when it comes to hunting.  Early breeders concentrated on establishing gorgeous red coats; once that was achieved they moved on to performance hunters.  Their origins date back to the red foxhounds brought to the United States by Scottish immigrants.  The Redbone Coonhound was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2009.

The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno hunts by sight, scent, and hearing.  This breed has two coat types smooth and wired.  The preferred coat color is yellow or fawn with white markings.  The Portuguese Podengo Pequeno was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 2013.

The Plott hunts both bear and boar (they are also used in coonhunting); this is a powerful and well-muscled dog.  Did you know the Plott is the state dog of North Carolina?  The Plott has a smooth glossy coat with colors ranging from brindle to solid black with saddle markings.  The American Kennel Club recognized the Plott in 2006.

Dogs In The Hound Group

The Pharaoh Hound is graceful and powerful and more importantly fast.  Their coat colors range from red, chestnut, red golden; with markings of white on the tip of their tail, chest, toes, and a line down the center of their face.  The Pharaoh Hound has a unique trait known as "blush"; their nose and ears turn a deep rose color when they are happy or excited.  This breed originated in Egypt and can be traced back 3000 years BC; making them an ancient breed.  Did you know the Pharaoh Hound is the National dog of Malta?  The American Kennel Club recognized the Pharaoh Hound in 1983.
