Importance Of Training Your Dog

That cute ball of fur enters our world with a lot of curiosity, but not any manners.  It is up to you to train them so that they will know what is expected of them.  They have to learn socializing with their human family and the animal world as well.  Housebreaking is utmost in priority if they will be living indoors.  Crate training is beneficial as well.  When do you start?  As soon as you bring them home.

If you have the motivation and the time you can do obedience training yourself.  Most communities have training programs that can help those who don't know where to begin.  These programs are relatively inexpensive, meetings are once or twice a week.  You will need to practice daily what you learn in the class.  There are more expensive programs that meet daily, there are even boot camp programs where your dog stays at a training facility.  You should not start an obedience program till your dog has all their vaccinations.

The ideal training situation is where you are actively involved.  Don't approach it as a chore, but as a fun time to spend with your dog. Dogs love the training; their main goal is to please you.

Keep in mind that training is not something you do for a few weeks; it should last for the life of your pet.  There will be times that they test a situation; that is why it is so important to keep your dog's life structured and routine.  You may find that boring, but a happy dog will thrive in that environment.

Praise should be handed out daily just like food and water.  Let them know when they do something right, a loving pat, kind words, treats.  It is not necessary to always reward good behavior with treats, your words and touch say so much more to them.

Ten Reasons To Have A Dog

  1. I wanted to see if my spouse really meant those vows.
  2. If you can train and show one dog; why not ten?
  3. Our kids were not enough of a challenge.
  4. The neighbors don't complain enough.
  5. Our garden and back yard needed renovations; and I was not willing to hire a gardener.
  6. I love the sound of puppies; dawn, morning, mid morning, noon, mid afternoon, dusk, evening, midnight, pre-dawn (I think you get the idea)
  7. I felt the furniture looked too nice.
  8. I wanted my vet to have a new Mercedes.
  9. I don't think sleeping through the night is really good for you.
  10. I love dog hair in and on everything!

Lament of a Stud Dog

Lament Of A Stud Dog
(author unknown)

My job is making puppies,
And I get two tries at that.
They pat me and tell me "Good Boy"
And that's the end of that.

It's not my job to carry pups
And make them grow or to nurse them.
And feed and clean and make them strong
That's for mother and a person.

It's not my job to wean them
And feed them calcium and food,
And stack and gait and housebreak
And make them sow or brood.

It's not my job to plan the breeding,
And learn what produces well.
To study pedigrees; and learn what's there,
And pick out what will sell.

It's not my job to be on hand
When points are given out.
The breeders, owners, dam, and friends
Take all the credit with a shout.

It's not my job to deliver a winner
It's only genes I sell
But let those puppies turn out bad,
Then guess who catches HELL!

Alone Again

Alone Again
(author unknown)

I wish someone would tell me
What it is that I've done wrong,
Why I have to stay chained up
and left alone so long,
They seemed so glad to have me
When I came here as a pup,
There were so many things we'd do
While I was growing up,
They couldn't wait to train me
As a companion and a friend,
And told me how they'd never fear
Being left alone again,
The children said they'd feed me
And brush me every day,
They'd play with me and walk with me
If I could only stay

But now the family hasn't time
They often say I shed,
They do not want me in the house
Not even to be fed,
The children never walk me
They always say, (Not now)
I wish that I could please them
Won't someone tell me how?
All I had you see; was love
I wish they would explain,
Why they said they wanted me
Then left me on a chain.

Happy Mother's Day!

Mother

If I could give you diamonds for each tear you cried for me,
If I could give you sapphires for each truth you helped me see,
If I could give you rubies for the heartaches that you have known,
If I could give you pearls for the wisdom that you have shown,
Then you would have a treasure Mother, that would mount up to the skies,
That would almost match the sparkle in your kind and loving eyes,
But I have no pearls or diamonds; as I am sure you are well aware,
So I will give you gifts more precious, my devotion, love and care.

AB2304 Gets The Ax

The Assembly Bill 2304 in the state of California was voted down; the committee voted 6 to 0 on the bill.  AB2304 was introduced by Assembly Member Martin Garrick on February 24, 2012.  Basically the bill would have allowed non-veterinarians to perform teeth cleaning with scalers.  A scaler is a metal instrument that is used to scrape the calculus, soft deposits, tartar, and stains from teeth.

I understand both sides of this issue; the decision factor of you personally deciding if you will use a veterinarian or someone else to use a scaler on your dog's teeth has now been taken out of your hands.  I think that is probably most troublesome regarding the axing of the bill.  It seems like this would be something we could personally decide to do or not.  People love their pets and try to make the best choices for their care.

Veterinarians recommend teeth cleaning annually for your pets.  It is an expensive procedure and most of them use anesthesia to put your pet under while performing the procedure.  If you have a big dog like a Saint Bernard you know that you don't want to put them under anesthesia unless you absolutely have to.

Whenever there is evidence of gum disease or abscesses, see your veterinarian.  Common sense tells all of us that.

It would be nice to have more alternatives to teeth cleaning outside a veterinarian's office.  I think there are lay people that can safely perform scaling on teeth.  How would you feel if you could no longer purchase teeth whitening kits from stores instead of going to a dentist for the procedure?  This is a choice that you can make without legislation; seems like we could each decide this issue as well.
