Dog Wisdom

His friends he loved.  His direst earthly foes--Cats--I believe he did but feign to hate. My hand will miss the insinuated nose, Mine eyes that tail that wagg'd contempt at fate. - Sir William Watson

New Pages Added To Blog

We have been busy in recent days adding some new pages to our blog; we hope you will enjoy the content.  We now have a page with photos of our Saint Bernards.  Looking for a dog show in California, check out our page which shows All-Breed Dog Shows and Saint Bernard Specialty Shows in California.  We now have  three pages of links; one for Saint Bernard Clubs, Saint Bernard websites located in the USA, and a page listing Saint Bernard websites from countries around the world.

On our other blog we have been busy as well, Saints Bernards R' Special.  Check out the following list of pages located on this blog.
We are not promoting any of these links; they have just been provided for you to check out; if you want.  I realized several years ago it was difficult to find certain Saint Bernard information that I was looking for and because of that I have created a good size listing of Saint Bernard websites.

Fearful Dogs

If separation from you seems to be the trigger for anxiety or fear.  Make some changes in how you leave your dog.  Don’t make a big production that you are leaving.  Do some practices with leaving, pick up your keys and walk out the door, then come back in.  Don’t try to sneak out; you probably do more damage with that than you realize.

Never use a vacuum cleaner or lawnmower to chase your dog.  Take the time to actually play and run with your dog. Throwing a ball, playing tug is good exercise for both of you.

Dominance

Some dog trainers are now taking issue with the use of the word dominance when describing a dog.  One definition of the word dominance is; control or power over others.  However, another definition for dominance is exhibiting a genetic trait.  I think the problem most dog trainers have with the word is using the term as a human trait and applying that human trait to a dog.  I would agree that we as pet owners often use human characteristics when describing our dogs.  We love our dogs and they are part of our families.

More Superstitions

There are those who believe if a strange dog follows you; then you will have good luck.  If you encounter a black and white dog; then your business will be successful.  A sleepy dog that scratches itself foretells a change in the weather.  Some people feel if they are followed by a black dog they will be lucky.  A newborn baby licked by a dog will be a fast healer.  Most of these seem silly; but many people are supersitious.

Bamse

Bamse is a well-known Saint Bernard mascot for the Free Norwegian Forces during World War II.  Bamse is a Norwegian word which means teddy bear.

Captain Erling Hafto was Bamse's owner; he was also the master of the Norwegian whale catcher, Thorodd.  Soon after the start of World War II; the Thorodd was drafted by the Royal Norwegian Navy to act as a coastal patrol vessel. Bamse became an official member of the crew on February 9, 1940.  The Thorodd was used as a patrol vessel, POW transport, and as a minesweeper.

Bamse was a wonderful morale booster for the crew; he was also well known by the civilian population in the area.  He was often seen on the front gun tower of the boat during a battle; the crew made him a metal helmet for protection.  Bamse performed several acts of heroism and community service as well.
