Things to Consider (cont.)
- Groom your dog - Regular brushing is beneficial to your dog's coat. Short-haired dogs can benefit from a rake brush. This pulls out the loose undercoat. I use this and a wire pin brush on my smooth Saint Bernards. Long-haired dogs will require a longer time brushing them; this keeps tangles and matts from becoming overwhelming. There are many types of brushes out there, if you are not sure what to use for your particular breed, ask your breeder. I use the wire pin brushes for long-haired Saint Bernards. A metal comb is very benefical around the ears and other areas where the fur can become matted. By slowly working the comb through the matted area, you can be successful in getting the fur free without having to cut the matted area out.

Things to Consider (cont.)
- Clip those nails - This is really a good idea, if you feel comfortable doing it yourself. By keeping nails clipped, you can sometimes avoid nail breaks and fractures. Both of which can cause your dog discomfort and they may even limp because of a nail break or fracture. Nail grinders used by many groomers and dog handlers; are a great tool. This device allows you to evenly smooth off your dog's nails. You are also less likely to cut into the quick with these tools, which will cause bleeding on their nails.

Things to Consider (continues)
- Bathe your dog - You should regularly bathe your dog. If you chose to bathe them yourself, use a good shampoo, be prepared to spend more time rinsing than shampooing. You never want to leave any trace of shampoo on your dog's coat or skin. Make this an enjoyable experience, not one you both dread. Bathing your own dog, gives you the opportunity to go over their entire body to check for unusual growths, sores, bites, bumps, skin irriations; anything out of the ordinary. You just might find something that you should have your veterinarian to look at. Many people take their dogs to a groomer, this may work best for you as well.

Things to Consider (cont.)
- Vaccinate - There are a series of shots that your puppy should receive, check with your veterinarian to see what they are and when they should be given. Vaccinating your puppy and dog helps them ward off diseases that can kill them. Veterinarians are now able to save some puppies that develop parvo, but their immune system will never be as strong. For a list of some recommended vaccinations visit our website.

Things to Consider (cont.)
- Feed a good diet - Name brand dog foods may be more expensive, but they are the better choice. One thing to consider with name brands, with most you get lower stool volume. Usually with the name brands you can use smaller portions to satisfy your pet. Pick a brand that has been around for a long time. Look at the ingredient list on the package, if corn is listed somewhere at the top; then it is probably not a good choice. I recommend puppy food for the first year, they contain the necessary nutrients for your fast growing puppy. Puppy food is more expensive, but you are only going to use it for that first year. Always make sure your puppy or dog has access to plenty of fresh water.

Things to Consider (cont.)
- Set house rules - Most of us don't want our pets running around indoors, drinking from the toilet, getting on the furniture, etc. We need to set some house rules, right from the start. Every family member should be aware of the house rules; they need to consistently be enforced by everyone. Right from the start you will want your new puppy or dog to demonstrate good behaviors. It will be up to you to teach them these good behaviors.
