Things to Consider - continues

  1. Prepare for disasters - Fires, floods, hurricanes, blizzards, or earthquakes can disrupt our lives. So we need to be prepared; make sure you will have food, water, and emergency kit for your pets.

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. Find a petsitter or boarding facility - There will always be situations where you cannot bring your dog along; so it is important to find someone or someplace for your dog while you are away. There are many good boarding facilities out there; do the research and find one in your area that will work for your dog. I prefer petsitters, your dog stays at his own home where they will be the most comfortable. You will have to research for a good petsitter just like the boarding facility.

Things to Consider - continues

  1. Travel Safely - Consider using a crate while traveling with your dog. If you don't have room for a crate, use a seatbelt harness for your dog. Don't allow your dog to ride in the open bed of your truck, and don't let them ride with their head hanging out an open window.

Wednesday, April 20, 2011

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. Watch the heat - Never leave your dog in a closed up car, whenever the sun is out; heat builds up very quickly in a closed up car. Heat stroke is deadly. If your dog becomes a victim to this you must react quickly. Place ice packs around them; in order to try and lower their body temperature. Get them to the vet! Make sure your dog always has access to fresh water and shade on sunny days.

Things to Consider - continues

  1. Provide Shelter - If your dog will be outdoors, then make sure they have protection from the elements. Your dog will need shade to protect them from the heat, and warmth to protect them from the cold, plus an area so they can get out of the rain, wind, sleet, or snow.

Monday, April 18, 2011

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. ID Your Dog - I can't tell you how many times I have encountered a stray dog with no identification. It is very important to keep a collar and ID information on your dog. A dog with an identification tag is much more likely to be returned to you.

Things to Consider (continues)

  1. Protect from poisons - We all know to keep poisons out of reach from our children, the same rule applies to our furry pets. Antifreeze is often mentioned to keep away from our pets; the stuff is deadly. Many people keep their pets in their garage; so make sure they do not have access to this poison. If you suspect that your pet has been poisoned, seek veterinarian assistance immediately! For a list of other common household toxins visit Brandykegs' website, scroll down on the vaccination page and you will find the list.

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. Know your breed's health risks - Heart disease, epilepsy, reproductive concerns, cancers, hip dysplasia, bloat just to name a few. Whenever you notice changes (that go on for more than a few days) in your dog's behavior or daily routine, don't ignore it; something may be wrong. Check with your veterinarian or contact your breeder; both are good sources for help with health risks.

Things to Consider (continues)

  1. Prevent Obesity - It is very important to maintain a healthy weight for your pet. They need regular exercise just like all of us. Make the effort to take them out daily for a walk, both of you will benefit from this activity. Feeding your dog table scraps, or sharing snack items with them, should be avoided. Both will cause them to become beggars for food, most people food is just not a good idea for your furry friend. As your pet ages; weight gain can become a problem. They may not be as active, so they don't burn off the calories. Consider a quality weight management dog food to help cut back on the calories they consume.

Things to Consider (continues)

  1. Clean those teeth - If you begin this when they are young and keep it up regularly, it is an easy task. Take regular baking soda, add just enough water to make a paste. Apply this paste to your dog's teeth. You can use a doggy toothbrush, a soft cloth, or even your finger to apply to your dog's teeth. In the beginning they may be reluctant to this, be patient and try again. Make this a positive experience for your dog, never try to force this on them.

Monday, April 11, 2011

Things to Consider (continues)

  1. Exercise - Not only is exercise good for all of us; it is good for your dog as well. Make it a daily routine to take them for a walk, or play with them in your yard or nearby park. Puppies have lots of energy, exercise is a good way to use some of it up. Plus if they have a release for some of this energy, they might not get into as much mischief.

Best of luck to all exhibitors from Brandykegs Saint Bernards!

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. Groom your dog - Regular brushing is beneficial to your dog's coat. Short-haired dogs can benefit from a rake brush. This pulls out the loose undercoat. I use this and a wire pin brush on my smooth Saint Bernards. Long-haired dogs will require a longer time brushing them; this keeps tangles and matts from becoming overwhelming. There are many types of brushes out there, if you are not sure what to use for your particular breed, ask your breeder. I use the wire pin brushes for long-haired Saint Bernards. A metal comb is very benefical around the ears and other areas where the fur can become matted. By slowly working the comb through the matted area, you can be successful in getting the fur free without having to cut the matted area out.

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. Clip those nails - This is really a good idea, if you feel comfortable doing it yourself. By keeping nails clipped, you can sometimes avoid nail breaks and fractures. Both of which can cause your dog discomfort and they may even limp because of a nail break or fracture. Nail grinders used by many groomers and dog handlers; are a great tool. This device allows you to evenly smooth off your dog's nails. You are also less likely to cut into the quick with these tools, which will cause bleeding on their nails.

Wednesday, April 6, 2011

Things to Consider (continues)

  1. Bathe your dog - You should regularly bathe your dog. If you chose to bathe them yourself, use a good shampoo, be prepared to spend more time rinsing than shampooing. You never want to leave any trace of shampoo on your dog's coat or skin. Make this an enjoyable experience, not one you both dread. Bathing your own dog, gives you the opportunity to go over their entire body to check for unusual growths, sores, bites, bumps, skin irriations; anything out of the ordinary. You just might find something that you should have your veterinarian to look at. Many people take their dogs to a groomer, this may work best for you as well.

Tuesday, April 5, 2011

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. Vaccinate - There are a series of shots that your puppy should receive, check with your veterinarian to see what they are and when they should be given. Vaccinating your puppy and dog helps them ward off diseases that can kill them. Veterinarians are now able to save some puppies that develop parvo, but their immune system will never be as strong. For a list of some recommended vaccinations visit our website.

Sunday, April 3, 2011

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. Feed a good diet - Name brand dog foods may be more expensive, but they are the better choice. One thing to consider with name brands, with most you get lower stool volume. Usually with the name brands you can use smaller portions to satisfy your pet. Pick a brand that has been around for a long time. Look at the ingredient list on the package, if corn is listed somewhere at the top; then it is probably not a good choice. I recommend puppy food for the first year, they contain the necessary nutrients for your fast growing puppy. Puppy food is more expensive, but you are only going to use it for that first year. Always make sure your puppy or dog has access to plenty of fresh water.

Saturday, April 2, 2011

Things to Consider (cont.)

  1. Set house rules - Most of us don't want our pets running around indoors, drinking from the toilet, getting on the furniture, etc. We need to set some house rules, right from the start. Every family member should be aware of the house rules; they need to consistently be enforced by everyone. Right from the start you will want your new puppy or dog to demonstrate good behaviors. It will be up to you to teach them these good behaviors.

April Fool's Day

April Fool's Day is not an actual holiday, but it is celebrated by most everyone. The day is observed by playing practical jokes on family and friends. Early references to April Fool's Day go clear back to Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.
