Dogs In The Sporting Group

The Irish Setter is known for their powerful movement and style; and they also have a wonderful clown-like personality.  The Setter was bred to "set" game; they would crouch near the birds allowing the hunter to approach and throw a net over them.  The Irish Setter was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1878.

Are Dogs Really Pack Animals?

Dogs are social, yes – they communicate with one another and with us and they form social bonds. Sometimes dogs will form a temporary band, for instance to run down a rabbit. And obviously most dogs adapt well to living in households with people and other animals. But scientists have observed free-living dogs – city strays and village dogs, for instance – for decades, and those dogs just don’t form permanent, stable packs. You’ll see a mother dog with pups, or a bunch of males following around a female in heat, but you won’t see the dog equivalent of a wolf pack, with a long-term parent pair, an adolescent or two, and the current crop of pups.

Fearful Dogs

Before you actually start to help your dog with fear issues; determine that there are no underlying health issues.  Pain and illness can be manifested by fear.  Rescued or older dogs will be much more challenging with fear issues because the fear can be much more established.  If you see fear in your young puppy it should be considered a priority to help them overcome it and quickly.

To help your young puppy with fear; use distraction.  Bring out a favorite toy, move to another room(they will probably follow you); remember don’t coddle them when they are afraid.  Move on to a new activity to draw their interest and get them focused on something else.

Training A Saint

Housebreaking a puppy is another very important part of training.  It is pretty predictable when a puppy is going to need a potty break; so be proactive and take them outdoors.  Once a puppy has eaten, take them outdoors and be sure to praise them each and every time they do their business outdoors.  If you have some playtime with your puppy, afterward take them outdoors.  When they wake up from a nap, first thing in the morning and last thing at night; take them outdoors.  Repetition will teach them to go outdoors to relieve themselves.  Continual praise when they go outdoors is so very important as well.  If people are not consistent with housebreaking, their solution is simply to keep the dog outdoors.

Christmas Gift

Christmas Gift

Most of us love to give and get a Christmas gift.
What a wonderful way to give one’s spirits a lift.

It doesn’t matter if the package is large or small.
It can be something handmade, or purchased from the mall.

Underneath our Christmas tree
The Christmas gift so lovely.

Colorful papers and curly bows
What’s hidden inside the giver only knows.

Let’s all remember, the time someone spent on choosing it.
Make use of it; on a shelf don’t let it sit.

Mankind’s better side comes out at this time of year.
I wish we could always accept one another without fear.

Remember your excitement as a child
It will do you a world of good to go a little wild.

Tell your family and friends that you love them
Join together and sing a holiday hymn.

We look at this season
With many reasons.

May love and laughter fill your home
As your family and friends you welcome.
